A Greek gem in Brooklyn. (Also, conveniently my local.)

I’ve lived on the border of Prospect Heights for nearly 13 years. To say I’ve seen this neighborhood transform is an understatement. Back in 2006, the restaurant options were lacking, save for a few enduring outposts like Tom’s, The Islands, or Soda Bar. I’ve seen so many spots come and go and the same cursed corner sadly turn over café after café. As a local, you hope for the best for these new ventures…but you’re never sure if it’s going to last.

For the longest time, the space at 760 Dean Street remained vacant. A tease of what could be. Eventually, my friend Jen moved in up the road and we would constantly speculate what might go in there. And then it happened. In the spring of 2016, Underhill Brooklyn sprang to life.

Huge fans of Greek food, Jen and I were eager to try it out. It was love at first souvlaki and we’ve been consistently going back ever since.

The menu has gone through some iterations since they first opened, but everyone’s favorite Greek staples have stayed on for good. Think pork and chicken souvlaki, lamb keftedes, spanakopita, grilled octopus, shrimp saganaki, grilled chicken with lemon potatoes…you get the drill. They also have burgers, mezze spreads, and salads. But the thing is, none of these specialties are just phoned in. Their chefs legit know what they’re doing. Just look.

Best of all, they have an ever-changing array of daily specials depending on the season. I nearly flipped when I tried their grilled branzino. Same goes for the night that Jen and I each polished off a roasted lamb shank. You know…just two girls, some wine, and a medieval looking piece of meat. I also get weak for their grilled pork ribs…fall-off-the-bone deliciousness with a side of tzatziki.

I love the fact that it’s a family run operation with honest and insanely hospitable staff. (They offer you a piece of baklava at the end of every meal as a gesture and occasionally the odd Greek version of a Kit Kat.) You walk in and they know you. It’s a home away from home. And I’m certain it will be here to stay for years to come.

In the area visiting the Brooklyn Museum, Barclays Center, or Brooklyn Botanic Garden? Make a point to stop in for brunch or dinner. You won’t be disappointed. (And tell them I sent you!)
